The history, how it works, why it is compelling
Past life regression was one of the first topics I ever read and researched. What is it? Where did it come from?
Past life regression is the process of using hypnotherapy to recall past life memories from deep within our subconscious mind. Dr. Michael Newton and Dr. Brian Weiss did not create it or stumble upon it first- but they were some of the first to open up about it publicly- and I can only imagine the courage that it took them. Prior to them, we had Morey Bernstein who worked on the famous Bridey Murphy case.
It is believed that past life regression was originally developed by A.R Martin in the 1940’s.
Newton and Weiss both have similar stories regarding how they stumbled into afterlife and past life memories. They were both general hypnotherapists who used it for helping their patients locate the source of their chronic pains, traumas, and phobias that may have been blocked out or lost in their memory.
Newton and Weiss had asked their patients to go to the origins of their pains in a generic chronic pain hypnotherapy regression session. Quickly, their patients began to describe the events and sights of a non-modern life. They, of course, did not believe what they were hearing at first, so they asked questions. It was relatively easy from there for them to realize that what their patients were remembering was real. Now, Newton and Weiss each have thousands of case studies of their patients and plenty of publications.
This form of hypnotherapy takes the human brain into different states of brain waves. Most commonly in PLR’s, we enter the Theta state- which is 4-7 Hz. Here, we gain access to past life memories.
We also have Life Between Lives- which is a step deeper than Past Life Regressions. LBL’s take us into our deaths and into the afterlife- where thousands of details have been revealed.
As someone with diagnosed OCD- I am my own skeptic. I have fought with myself for years going back and forth with what I can believe and what I can’t. Still, past life regression and life between lives has always been something I can fully believe in, and here is why in three simple words.
- detail
- consistency
- connection
Detail-
When recalling past life memories, we are able to give incredibly detailed sights, emotions, and memories. These include locations, years, names, the clothes they’re wearing, and so many other beautiful details.
As a student of psychology, I have always been aware that it is our mind’s natural instinct to be a story-teller. The thing is- how are we all telling the exact same story?
Consistency-
Globally- thousands upon thousands of people have received PLR’S and LBL’S. Right now, let’s focus on LBL’s.
When a patient is recalling their death- the process that is described has a profound consistency. The tunnel, a magnetic pull out of our bodies, and light. Even further, the same exact processes are described in the afterlife itself.
Through this incredible consistency, Dr. Michael Newton & Dr. Brian Weiss have been able to give- in extreme detail- the entire process of life, death, and rebirth. Because of this consistency, we have diagrams of sights in the afterlife (which can be seen in Newtons Destiny of Souls,) we know the different soul level colors, and so many other fascinating details that I hope to share eventually.
Thousands upon thousands of unconnected individuals globally- all describing the exact same sights. Coincidence, or pattern? Pattern.
Connection-
This is where it gets really real. While under past life regression, as I previously stated, we are able to give our past names, locations, life events, families, everything.
Dr. Michael Newton himself was a historian- so he was able to actually connect what his clients were telling him to individuals who truly once lived.
It is incredible that using the details pulled from our subconscious- we can then connect it solid past existences.
In some cases, it is believed that our birth marks may represent the way we passed in our past lives. It is believed we carry small echoes of each life we have lived- whether it be part of our personalities, physical attributes, or being able to recall memories. For example, under past life regression, someone may have died due to gunshot wound, and then wake from the hypnosis to reveal a birthmark in the same spot, similar to what a gunshot wound scar may look like. Similarly to that, perhaps someone lost a limb in a violent event, or even just damaged it severely. I mentioned chronic pain earlier- this is where that comes into play. If someone damaged their knee in a past life, they are likely to have unexplainable pain in that area in their current incarnation. It is important to note that this is not any form of punishment- it is just an echo of a past life.
Children are especially gifted with this. As young children, we haven’t been corrupted by school, society, or other external factors yet. Babies and children are in a sort of gray area where the veil of forgetfulness has not fully set. They are still able to recall memories- which is a topic I will get into on another post.
My sources for the information in this post come from the works of Newton and Weiss themselves, as well as the University of Virginia Division of Perceptual Studies.
